I basically had to wrestle my own laptop from Nik in order to write this, so it needs to be a decent post. He has threatened to revoke my admin privileges on this blog a couple of times already, so I'm on borrowed time here...
Our flight out of Perth was scheduled to leave at 7:35am, but (in true Qantas style) we took off closer to 8am. In the end this delay was quite welcome, as it gave Nik the time he needed to process the information about Tony Abbott snatching the leadership from Malcolm. Let's just say that emotions were running high in the Perth Domestic Terminal, and leave it at that.

The flight itself was uneventful, which I suppose is something to be thankful for. Breakfast was scrambled eggs and a rubbery sausage; for which we were less thankful.
(Nik: It is worth noting, though, that despite Zarah's repeated claims as we strode towards airport security ("You just watch this. Those racists are going to pull me aside straight away. You just watch") we sailed right through.)
We landed in Brisbane on time, and managed to catch a shuttle bus shortly afterwards to our hostel. We are staying at BUNK, Brisbane, which is located in Fortitude Valley (or, "the Valley", to borrow a local phrase). The hostel came recommended on sites such as hostelworld and hostelbookers, and we are pretty happy with it. It was only 20 minutes from the airport, and is straddled by Chinatown on one side and a bevy of clubs and ale houses on the other. The rooms are pretty clean, and have large windows overlooking the surrounding streets and city. There is a rooftop spa and heated pool, and a bar that allows you to take drinks up to the aforementioned. However given the weather warning of a storm, I haven't utilised those facilities.
We spent the later part of the afternoon wandering around the Valley, then wound up in a park next to a statute of Thomas Byrne, whoever the hell he was, at which point it began to drizzle. Luckily that was about as bad as the weather got. In the evening we met up with Eileen and Craig, who generously shouted us dinner at a great little restaurant called Tibetan Kitchen. It was lovely to see Eileen's kind and familiar face in a new city, and she and Craig provided us with many laughs over dinner.

Tomorrow we begin our long-winded and indirect journey to Los Angeles, California! We'll be leaving Brisbane around midday, stopping over in Auckland, and then touching down in LA (and beginning Wednesday December 2 all over again like some madcap Groundhog Day adventure). We promise our future entries will be much juicier and loaded with calories.
Californiaaaaaaaa...Californiaaaaaaaa...here we coooooo-ooooooome!
